Just Kidding! Gourmets are actually really, really good if used correctly. Let’s do a soup!

Gourmets in Fate of The Empress are often misunderstood (mostly by me) and someone (me) might think they aren't a good MC class (me). But those people (me) are wrong! By using the power of their ladle they splash soup on the enemies, feed soup to allies, and create a big wave of soup that helps allies and hurts enemies. What kind of soup your MC is throwing around, you ask? It’s probably tomato.
I. Skills

II. Gems

MC Gourmet gems are pretty close to Meixin’s observations, but seeing as Meixin is wrong about pretty much everything let’s talk how I would set it up:
ATK: the heal from gourmets passive is atk-based, as is the buff they give from their secondary skill. This is an extremely important stat.
DEF/DMG RES/HP/RES: Defensive gems are important as well, any mix of these will work, really, tho I tend to prioritize DEF>HP>DMG RES>RES
EVA: Evasion isn’t as important on mc gourmet as it is on other heroes because they can usually get controlled and eat damage for a round or two, but if you have any laying around might as well fill open slots with them.
III. Team Formation
The format of ‘2 group damage, 2 single damage, and 1 control’ is recommended.
=> This is WRONG. The recommended format of ‘2 group damage, 2 single damage, and 1 control’ actually goes by role instead of class, it still has several problems:
Spreads damage potential way too thin: Having to spread your offensive resources across four different damage dealers is just going to just cause you to have four mediocre damage dealers. The only time this is even remotely possible to pull off is if you are one of the top world spenders and can afford to put tons of atk/crit/dmg+/agi gems and crystals on everyone. If you are a massive whale that can afford all that stuff then disregard and do whatever you want, lol.
Extremely Limited Utility: Scholars and Guards are real good damage dealers, and some of them can do ok as hybrids but you won’t get the support and control you need at higher levels of play.
You end up having useless heroes: When you have to spread your damage potential you’re going to see how ineffective it is the higher you get. So then you have to push those resources onto your best damage dealers, making the ones left not able to do much but stand there and eventually die.

(Actual real photo of your damage dealers)
So there are the recommended team formation for Gourmet.
III.a Super Tank: 1 guard or scholar, 3 gourmets, 1 doctor

This is one of my signature teams, and uses some powerful gourmet combos to create a nigh-unkillable defensive core. While MC *is* a gourmet it isn’t really the best healer in the world. This is why it was so hard for me to figure it out properly. But running it with other Gourmets creates a voltron of gourmets. A Gourtron, if you will.
Gourmet 1: With MC Gourmet as jack-of-all-soups, you need to have a good healer who can do more than just one kinda-ok-heal-sometimes per round. Run Diaochan if at all possible. And run her with Peacock. She will bring back any damage dealer or tank piece that may have fallen to a freak accident (aka nuclear child), and the peacock will keep her from going down herself.
Gourmet 2: You want to protect your team, especially your single damage dealer. For that Jia Baoyu is the absolute best choice. He’s extremely good at stopping the likes of Mozi and Li Bai because his shield passive calculates for each individual hit. So If Mozi is hitting his usual nine billion times, Jia will calculate the protecc for each individual hit.
Gourmet 3: This slot is a little more flexible. Zhuang Zhou is the obvious choice as the final Gourmet, but not everyone will have all of these folks. Wang Zhaojun, Wu Zetian, Pan An, Ji Kang are all strong options as well. If you run a non-healer gourmet in this slot, try to get Selfless Spirit or Phoenie on them, (preferably both!).
Doctor: You need a doc that can pull the weight of control here, so you need someone strong like Mi Yue, Guiguzi, Daji are all excellent options here. Make em fast and accurate as possible, with Reindeer for some added control.
Scholar/Guard: This is going to be your one and only big damage hero. This allows you to focus all of your strongest offensive paraphernalia onto them. Slow or fast, multiple targets or single targets, you can really go for whatever you want here, so long as you build them extremely powerful.
Guard flavor: A guard nuke is a lot of fun for picking off enemies one by one while the guard hides behind the skirts of your Gourmets. Zhan Zhao, Prince Gao, Lyu Bu, Zhou Yun, Sun Ce are all great choices here. Keep in mind if you are going to run the Ce-man you need to extra uber invest in him as he is only an SSR, albeit an extremely powerful one.
Scholar Flavor: Well obviously Mozi is the scholar of choice here, but Li Bai has some awesome synergy with this team, especially when skinned. He can follow up every attack, making it seem like your gourmets are striking harder. Zhuge Liang is also an option, though he is very squishy. Li Qingzhao is my favorite budget option due to her increasing atk buff skyrocketing her power while she stays protecc’d.
III.b Super Tank modifications
“What if I despise Jia? What if I don’t have Diaochan? What if I don’t want to follow your advice and instead do something else but still get your advice on it!?” Friend, I have answers:
1. Jia Baoyu sucks and I hate him! Why would you make me use him?
Well because he’s good and you’re wrong, but if you insist, there are other options.
Wu Zetian: She’s a tanky mctankerson and buffs crit and agi of allies with her passive, as well as atk with her rage skill (and grants an immediate action). I don’t generally recommend her here because she’s much more of an offensive support hero.
Princess Linglong: The unassuming lil princess is actually quite good on teams like this. She can stun with her active skill and buffs allies with her rage. She’s quite tanky if built right, as well, and runs Penguin proficiently.
Ying Zheng: This dude is amazing. Naturally tanky due to his doc status, he can also steal rage and reduce crit of the enemy heroes, further impeding their offensive potential.
Tough Piggy: this thing performs a very similar to Jia without the stigma of using Jia. It will protect the lowest hp ally for the first several turns. Slap it on a tanky hero and that should be all that’s needed.
2. I don’t have Diaochan, therefore I cannot rez, therefore I cannot make a good SuperTank team!
This isn’t really a big deal, you don’t *need* to be able to rez. You can easily just run Zhuang Zhou or Wang Zhaojun. Healing is healing.
3. Ok well what if I think your team sucks and don’t want to follow your advice, is there any other advice you can give me?
Yeah! You can drop a gourmet and run two damage dealers in case you’re feeling super iffy about only the one damage-dealer. You can also run two doctors if you’re feeling like you can’t control the fight well enough.
IV. Pets
MC Gourmet pets can run nearly any pet, but there are a few I really like for a gourmet, especially in Super Tank:

Penguin is extra hilarious on the MC Gourmet due to the chance to use the minor skill on the counter. A response can increase the atk and potentially cleanse an ally if your mc gets hit. Being able to cleanse is *HUGE* and subtle. Lots of people don’t actually look at the buffs/debuffs on the screen so you can cleanse and be back in action quickly.
Other pets: Phoenie, Tough Piggy, Tough/Timid Racoon are all excellent pets you can slap on an MC Gourmet.
V. Kids
This section will be short and I will probably add on to it in the future. But this is what I recommend for all Gourmet builds:

For PVP you see a ton of shields. These can be obnoxious to murderous. I almost always run at least one piercing shield if I’m going to be facing other players.

Arrow Blow hit’s so much harder the higher your MC’s attack *and* the higher the enemy's HP. This is incredibly powerful when taking on higher level NPCs, like Cascade Manor and Elites.
