“Oh no! They have Mozi!” I believe this would be the usual exclamation for those who do not have Mozi as one of their heroes lineup in Fate of The Empress (including me).

Contradictory to his badass character in FOTE, Mozi was in actuality a Chinese philosopher who founded the school of Mohism that advocated the concept of “universal love” (兼愛, jiān ài) or also known as “impartial caring”. This concept stressed that people should care for all people equally, regardless of status, background or familial ties. He also advocated meritocracy and consequentialism, that is to say the morality of an action is determined by the consequences that it brings about.

Mozi was born in 470 B.C in the State of Lu, Zhou Kingdom (present-day Tengzhou, Shandong Province) and died in 391 B.C. He was born from a lower-class artisan family and later on became an official. As he came from an artisan family, it was not surprising that he was skilled in building innovative devices. Amongst the devices that he created were wheeled ladders, and mechanical birds and he was also an expert on fortification. So far, there were no English records online mentioning any robots created by Mozi, but hey, it is not so far-fetched that he created one like the one used in FOTE.
As mentioned before, Mozi was also a government official. At one point in his years as an official, he served as a minister in the State of Song (in modern Henan). In some accounts, he was hailed as the greatest hero to come from Henan. He traveled from one war crisis zone to another in an attempt to advocate peace and dissuade rulers from their plans of conquest. It was said that he went to the State of Chu to forestall their attack on the State of Song and managed to overturn Chu's military stratagems. Hence, the war between the State of Chu and the State of Song was called off.

All in all, the life story of Mozi showed that he was a benevolent leader and cared about the good of the people. Indeed, he is one of the “OP” characters in FOTE, usually seen as ruthless and forceful, albeit good-looking. But, as the saying goes “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. A formidable character may, in reality, be a compassionate and caring person. Quoting a statement from Mozi:
“When there is universal love in the world it will be orderly, and when there is mutual hate in the world it will be disorderly.”
